Vintage Buffalo Coin Pendant / Trinket
Our Buffalo nickel pendants/ Trinkets were created using a sterling silver jump ring and an authentic 90 year old UD buffalo nickel.
The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a US copper–nickel five-cent piece that was struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser in 1912. Featuring a portrait of a Native American Indian on one side and an image of a buffalo (bison) on the other.
The Native American depiction on the coins obverse is believed to be based on three different Indigenous American. Two of the American Indians who modelled for Fraser as he sculpted the coin was named by the designer before his death. They were Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Although many have claimed to have had a sitting with Fraser for this design, he could not recall the name of the third person, and satisfactory documentation has not yet been found to identify that individual.
The model for the bison figure on the reverse of the coin was Black Diamond, an American bison that resided at the Central Park Zoo. Fraser also took inspiration from the wild bison he encountered growing up in Minnesota.
We have a variety of different dates from 1935/36/37.
This is just the coin/ pendant. No chain is included.
The coins have been cleaned and polished but little has been done to remove the original scratches which give these coins their character and history.
